Great Bridge is a community located in the independent city of Chesapeake in the U.S. state of Virginia. Its name is derived from the American Revolutionary War Battle of Great Bridge, which took place on December 9, 1775, and resulted in the final removal of British government from the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. Both company commanders within the 14th went down, and the bridge was scattered with the dead and dying. The captain of the Grenadiers, Charles Fordice, rose after being wounded in the knee and exclaimed: “the day is our own!”. The British again charged across the bridge, with several men reaching the Whig earthworks before being shot dead. The Battle of Great Bridge was the first major battle of the American Revolution in Virginia in 1775, fought between Patriot forces and British forces on a causeway and bridge across the Elizabeth River. It was a significant victory for the Patriots, who routed the British forces and forced them to abandon Norfolk and Princess Anne counties. The battle also inspired the Patriots to oust the royal governor, John Murray, fourth earl of Dunmore, from the colony.
